Nepenthes, aka Tropical pitcher plants, aka Monkey Cups
locally. I'm not a Nepenthes freak, so my collection is
anything but good. Still, here are some pics!
 |
Nepenthes madagascariensis. My very first
experience with a non-local Nepenthes. Everything was
clearly wrong - the stake, the ties, and the substrate.
Needless to say, the poor plant perished soon after.
Alas. |

A fine specimen of N.rafflesiana
"Brunei x Singapore Giant", passed to me by
another grower here. This picture was taken in 1996, but
what can 2 years do to a plant? Look at the picture
below! Hope this will encourage you to have more
patience with these oh-so-slow growing plants. |
 |
It is the same plant as the one above, now
with huge upper pitchers. Taken in 1998. I still have
this monster of a plant, but he's (yes, it's a male)
since given me lots of cuttings. Had to prune the plant
down, since he was threatening to climb up and invade my
bedroom upstairs.
NB: The girl beside the plant (my sister) was not
caught by the pitcher, please do not be mistaken and
accuse me of cruelty. However, this particular pitcher just
caught 2 large geckos the night before this picture was
taken. |

Foreground: Nepenthes alata "Lowland
Red"
Just behind is N.albomarginata. Notice the white margin
just below the peristome. |
 |
N.villosa - not from my own collection (I
wish!!), but taken by a friend who climbed Mt. Kinabalu
in year 2000. |

Pitcher of N.rafflesiana |
 |
Pitchers galore! This is my most prolific
N.rafflesiana yet! To its left is N.x
ventrata, and the
leftmost pot contains Utricularia calycifida. |
 |
N.maxima
"red peristome" - very beautiful plant
I received as a gift from a nursery in Cameron
Highlands, West Malaysia. This new pitcher came out 2
weeks after I brought the plant back, and its size and
vigour really came as a big surprise. |
 |
N.merilliana - what a tiny plant! It has
since grown 5 leaves since I purchased it in 2001, and
has put out 2 tiny pitchers. |
