The "Typical" form of D.muscipula is what you
normally see for sale elsewhere - green plants and traps, and
the insides of the traps turn light pink under strong lighting
conditions. Average plant diameter is 3-4 inches, and traps
generally do not grow larger than 1 inch long.
The interior of the traps are lined with sensitive trigger
hairs, which, when triggered twice or more, cause the trap to
snap shut on its prey. Provide full sun, stand in water, and
do not fertilise. Good food items include dead mealworms,
small crickets and roaches. Do not feed with overly-large prey
items, hamburger meat or any other non-insect prey types.
Playing with the traps too often (causing them to snap shut
without catching prey) will rapidly exhaust the plant and
cause its demise.
