The "Green Dragon" form of D.muscipula was a
supposed cross between a "Typical" flytrap and an
all-red variety. Plants have green petioles ("leaf
stalk") that are sometimes lined with red, while the
traps are a spectacular deep blood-red under full sun. Average plant diameter is 3-4 inches, and
forms one of the largest traps among all flytraps, up to 1.25
inches long.
The interior of the traps are lined with sensitive trigger
hairs, which, when triggered twice or more, cause the trap to
snap shut on its prey. Provide full sun, stand in water, and
do not fertilise. Good food items include dead mealworms,
small crickets and roaches. Do not feed with overly-large prey
items, hamburger meat or any other non-insect prey types.
Playing with the traps too often (causing them to snap shut
without catching prey) will rapidly exhaust the plant and
cause its demise.
